D-Link announces development of Femtocell solutions based upon Qualcomm’s FSM Chipset

D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for consumers, businesses, and service providers, today announced the development of UMTS femtocells using Qualcomm’s new FSM™ integrated system-on-a-chip. These new femtocells will take advantage of the integration on the FSM that allows for low cost residential and high performance enterprise access points.

With the demand for mobile data rising, femtocells placed in public and private locations will provide extra capacity and an exceptional user experience. In addition, operators can take advantage of new revenue opportunities, such as location based services, content pushing, synchronization and streaming services and presence triggering.

Statistics in 2008 show that 3.5 million Filipinos suffer from Diabetes Mellitus, a metabolism disorder that affects the body’s reaction to glucose or sugar when it is not broken down by insulin. Aside from this staggering number, 5% are still undetected, while another 8% are pre-diabetic.

As one of the leading causes of deaths in the Philippines and in the world, diabetes is a disease that does not discriminate. It strikes anyone—regardless of age or gender. If it goes undeterred, the World Health Organization (WHO) projected that by 2030, the number of diabetics around the world will reach 334 million people. Based on the same WHO study, 7.8 million of these cases will come from the Philippines. The health organization also predicts that the number of deaths will double between 2005 and 2030 without proper aid or awareness on the complications that arise due to the disease.

LTE technology to grow 3400% in the next 4 years

A study by market research and analysis firm In-Stat (www.instat.com) reveals that Long Term Evolution (LTE) is poised for a 3400% growth by 2015. The report states that in 4 years’ time, LTE would have successfully taken the crown from 3G as the most dominant mobile network technology around the world as 4G hardware and services become more accessible.

According to the report’s author Chris Kissel, “3G will remain the predominant service subscription, also with robust growth, but over the next five years things will trend toward LTE as 4G service availability is ramped up.”

 

Globe Chief Legal Counsel represents ASPAC in ITU working group

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a global inter-governmental organization on telecommunications composed of 192 member-states and some 700 corporations, has chosen Globe Telecom Chief Legal Counsel Rodolfo A. Salalima to represent the Asia-Pacific region as Vice-Chairman of a special ITU working group.

The Council Working Group on a Stable ITU Constitution shall meet in Geneva, Switzerland on June 27-29 to tackle and resolve amendment proposals to the ITU’s Constitution and Convention which is in the nature of a treaty. The Philippines is a party-signatory to it.

 

Android devices in Smart’s network more than doubled

In what could be seen as proof that subscribers are getting smarter, leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has revealed that the number of Android devices running on its network has jumped 102% in just three months.

The statistics, which includes numbers from end February to end May 2011, show that the biggest jump took place from April to May, with the OS increasing its network presence by 45%.
