Filipino students win top prizes in Kaspersky Lab’s student conference on cybercrime in Hong Kong

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content and threat management solutions, announced that students from the Philippines bested 12 other finalists from various countries in the recently concluded regional preliminary round of the Kaspersky Lab Asia Pacific and Middle East, Africa (MEA) Cup2012, an annual event that brings together students and young professionals from around the world in a collaborative environment to present and discuss issues relating to cybercrime.

The research papers presented by team leaders 21-year old Joshua Arvin Lat and 19-year old Ranyel Bryan Maliwanag won the first and second prizes, respectively, at the conference held on March 14 to 16 at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), a leading university in Asia in professional education and research.

First SMS Trojan detected for smartphones running Android

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, discloses that the first malicious program classified as a Trojan-SMS has been detected for smartphones running on Google’s Android operating system. Named Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a, it has already infected a number of mobile devices.

The new malicious program penetrates smartphones running Android in the guise of a harmless media player application. Users are prompted to install a file of just over 13 KB with the standard Android extension .APK. Once installed on the phone, the Trojan uses the system to begin sending SMSs to premium rate numbers without the owner’s knowledge or consent, resulting in money passing from a user’s account to that of the cybercriminals.

Kido worm, Sality virus top June 2010 malware statistics, Kaspersky Lab says

The Kido worm and Sality virus continue to top the list of the most malicious malware for the month of June this year, according to a report by Internet security software company Kaspersky Lab.

Both Kido and Sality and their variants have been topping the list since the start of the year, having infected a total of at least 1 million PCs per month. However, the list almost did not change from the previous month.

Adobe products: Hackers’ number one target in Q1 of 2010

According to Kaspersky Lab’s report ‘Information Security Threats in the First Quarter of 2010,’ Adobe products are currently the primary target for hackers and virus writers worldwide due to their prevalence and multi-platform capabilities. Furthermore, users of Adobe products are often unaware of the potential threat they are exposed to by opening PDF files of unknown origin.

Among the many varieties of exploit that were detected, the Exploit.Win32.Pdfka family with 42.97% was by far the most popular. This exploit takes advantages of vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat.

Facebook more popular phishing target than Google, IRS and RapidShare

Facebook, the world’s most popular social networking site, has ranked fourth in the top 10 most popular phishing targets on the web, overtaking even Google, the IRS and RapidShare, leading secure content management solutions developer Kaspersky Lab said in its latest report.
