Lenovo Raises Energy-Efficiency Bar with Its Smallest, Quietest Desktop PC

Lenovo reinvigorated the desktop PC space today with the ThinkCentre A61e ultra slim small form factor desktop. As the company’s smallest, quietest and most energy-efficient desktop yet, it has a footprint the size of an average telephone book, whisper quiet performance and choices of energy -efficient, 45-watt AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual core and AMD Sempron™ single core processors, all at an affordable price tag starting at PhP27,497.

The ThinkCentre A61e desktop marks Lenovo’s first product with EPEAT Gold status, the highest designation a product can achieve in the ranking. Operated by the Green Electronics Council, EPEAT ranks products on a variety of environmental attributes from energy efficiency to materials use to recyclability. Many organizations use this tool to help make purchasing decisions. Recognized for its environmental attributes, the ThinkCentre A61e desktop uses up to 90 percent reusable/recyclable materials as well as 90 percent recyclable packaging. It also can be powered by an optional solar panel from Advanced Energy Group.

The desktop surpasses the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star® 4.0 criteria with its 85 percent efficient power supply. As the first desktop in the industry to run on energy-efficient AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual core and AMD Sempron™ single core processors, it can help users save up to 50 percent in energy costs annually over previous models. For example:

A user could save, on average, more than PhP899 a year in energy costs and the equivalent of the carbon dioxide emissions created by a 1200km flight (equivalent to two round-trip plane flights from Boston to New York)

A customer deploying as few as 50 desktops could expect to save more than PhP45,260 a year in energy costs alone. And it could help avoid more than 9,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions.

A large enterprise deployment of 50,000 desktops could save more than PhP43.4 million in annual energy costs and cut more than 9 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions.

“The importance of maximizing energy efficiency and being environmentally conscious is touching all aspects of our daily lives, from the light bulbs we use to light our homes to the hybrid cars we drive to the green technology we rely on to run our businesses,” said, Frank Luburic, Senior Manager – Desktop, Asia Pacific Centre of Excellence (COE), Lenovo. “Lenovo is committed to providing an extensive menu of environmentally-responsible, energy-efficient technology choices, and the ThinkCentre A61e desktop is our signature item. For the first time, a major PC vendor has combined small size and consistently quiet acoustics with a light weight, highly energy-efficient desktop offering at an affordable price.”

As energy prices rise, finding ways to control these variable costs through more efficient technology becomes increasingly important.

“Lenovo and AMD have a shared commitment to providing customers the most secure, innovative and energy-efficient computing experience that can exceed their unique business needs,” said Greg White, corporate vice president and general manager, Desktop Division, AMD (NYSE:AMD). “The Lenovo ThinkCentre A61e desktop is an exciting milestone in our relationship as both companies continue to collaborate to raise the bar for PC design and energy efficiency.”

A Smaller, More Nimble Desktop
According to IDC, the worldwide desktop market grew year-over-year by 4.2 percent in the second quarter of 2007 with Lenovo growing 20.4 percent in this period.3 IDC forecasts worldwide shipments of the ultra small form factor desktop to grow by 52 percent from 2005 to 20104.

Taking up 25 percent less space than previous models and weighing just 3.6kgs, the ThinkCentre A61e ultra slim small form factor desktop fits the shrinking real estate in today’s work environment, making it an especially good fit for customers in education, medical and financial sectors. Not only smaller in size, the PC’s typical single, low-speed fan keeps it running cool for ultimate reliability and keeping it consistently quiet whether in idle mode or stretched to the maximum for peak performance.

The ThinkCentre A61e desktop follows Lenovo’s recent introduction of the ThinkCentre A61 desktop in tower form factor to equip enterprise users with leading technologies such as I/O port disablement for security, support for up to four monitors for data-intensive tasks and high energy efficiency by meeting the EPA® Energy Star 4.0 criteria.

Pricing and Availability
The ThinkCentre A61e and A61 desktops start at approximately PhP27,497 and are now through Business Partners and http://www.lenovo.com.

AMD Virtual Experience (AVE) Expanded

AMD announced wider adoption and significant enhancements for the AMD Virtual Experience ( http://ave.amd.com). This content-rich virtual tradeshow provides visitors a unique visual experience with even broader access to supplier and vendor buying decision information, as well as the latest on controlling energy consumption in the datacenter.

Major technology industry leaders are embracing the interactive, online environment to raise visibility of their solutions based on AMD Opteron™ processors, including the newly introduced Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors. Booths are now funded primarily by the participating technology partners, representing a change in business model since the site was introduced in September 2006.

“AMD has an unwavering focus on fostering connections to solve IT datacenter challenges, and, as such, our role as the catalyst for bringing together industry leaders has resulted in a cost-effective, yet undeniably personal alternative to the traditional tradeshow,” said Bob Brewer, corporate vice president, Marketing and Strategy, Computing Solutions Group, AMD. “As an interactive 3D environment, the AMD Virtual Experience is a natural extension of AMD technology, which enables the ultimate visual experience.”

Today’s latest enhancements include an expansion of user navigational control and features, such as a one-on-one chat application, increased video and collateral search capabilities, and virtual vendor shops. Registrants continue to be empowered to steer their own course, choose information of interest, participate in demos, download white papers and observe the keynotes at any time they wish – 24 hours a day, seven days a week – all from the comfort of their PC. Additional content, as well as new booths from technology partners, will continue to be rolled out over the next six months.

“Providing rich information to our customers, wherever and whenever they want it is a cornerstone in Dell’s commitment to help customers simplify the way they buy, deploy and manage their IT,” said Brad Anderson, senior vice president, Dell Product Group. “Quite simply, our close collaboration with AMD is helping us increase our virtual presence and impact on the market.”

The already heavily populated interface has received more than one million unique visitors and has delivered more than 600,000 downloaded pieces of collateral since its introduction last year. By increasing the number of leading technology partners and incorporating text and video content search capabilities, the visitors’ virtual experience is even better, helping them to quickly access information tailored to their specific needs and interests. Technology partners participating in the site for the first time are Appro, Cray, Dell, Egenera, Lenovo, Rackable Systems, Verari Systems and VMware.

“The Lenovo ThinkCentre A61e ultra small form factor desktop with choices of the energy-efficient, 45-watt AMD Athlon™ X2 dual-core processor and single-core AMD Sempron™ processor demonstrates our joint collaboration in providing an extensive menu of environmentally responsible, energy-efficient technology choices,” said Tom Tobul, executive director, Emerging Products Marketing, Lenovo. “And working with AMD to provide timely and useful information in one place to aid a visitor’s buying decision is exactly where we want to be to showcase our innovative ThinkCentre A61e desktop solutions.”
