A total of 10,000 high school and college students from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member schools will get the chance to receive, for free, their very own limited edition Smart Bro Plug-It modems on Saturday, 19 September at the “B Free” event organized by leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART).
Through “B Free”, to be held from 9am-4pm at the Megatent along Meralco Avenue in Ortigas, Pasig City, SMART-subsidiary Smart Broadband, Inc. (SBI) is officially making available the specially-designed, logo-emblazoned Smart Bro Prepaid Plug-It modem the broadband leader first introduced back in July.
The event comes at the heels of the price-slash that SMART announced in the last week of August, when it brought the price of Smart Bro Prepaid Plug-It to P995. At the B Free event, the USB modem’s price will slide further down to P895, inclusive of P100 load, or 5 hours of surfing time.
“Internet access nowadays is indispensable to students. As we continue to ‘broadband’ the entire country and make this service even more pervasive and more affordable than ever, we want them to be the first to benefit from the widest mobile broadband coverage offered by Smart Bro,” said Annie P. Naval, head of SMART’s Marketing Group.
The customized Smart Bro Prepaid Plug-It modem comes in the colors and designs of UAAP member-schools Adamson University, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Far Eastern University, National University, the University of the East, the University of the Philippines, and the University of Santo Tomas.
Designs will also be available for NCAA member-schools Colegio de San Juan de Letran, College of St. Benilde, Jose Rizal University, Mapua Institute of Technology, San Beda College, San Sebastian College-Recoletos, and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA.
As of end-June 2009, there are over 689,000 Smart Bro subscribers that enjoy the high-speed broadband connectivity made available nationwide by SMART. The wireless leader is also widely credited for having made mobile broadband accessible and more affordable to more people, when it launched Smart Bro Prepaid Plug-It in April 2008, the country’s first pay-as-you-go, mobile broadband service.
In the tradition of Smart Load, the groundbreaking introduction of Smart Bro Load, or the sachet-size packets of prepaid broadband connectivity made available through a wide network of over a million retailers present in every corner of the country, also helped advance SMART’s ‘Internet for All’ agenda – or to bring the benefits of the Internet down to the grassroots.
Smart Bro subscribers also benefit from SMART’s expanded High-speed Packet Access (HSPA) coverage, the widest in the country. SMART has over 2,300 cellsites providing mobile broadband all over the country — from Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte to Digos, Davao del Sur — with many more expected to go live before 2009 ends. Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, and other key cities are blanketed with seamless, high-speed mobile broadband which provides data rates of up to 5.8Mbps per user.
