New Dual-Core Intel® Atom™ Processor-Based Netbooks Hit Shelves

Intel Corporation announced that a dozen of new netbooks based on its new mobile dual-core Intel® Atom™ processors are available in stores today. The netbooks – available now and through the end of the year from manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Fujitsu, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, MSI, and Toshiba – enable new levels of support for applications like games, as well as Adobe Flash* technology for access to a number of Web pages including online hotel booking systems and multimedia sites such as YouTube* and Hulu*.

“Acer strives to continually improve on our customers’ total mobile experience, whether it is increased responsiveness or extended Internet interactivity through longer battery life,” said David Lee, associate vice president of Acer’s Mobile Computing Business Unit. “We are pleased to select dual-core Intel Atom processors for Acer netbooks, helping to empower netbook users achieve even more – both at work and at leisure.”

IDC Sees a Start of Faster Growth for Hardcopy Peripherals Market in Philippines by Year-End 2010

nternational Data Corporation (IDC) sees 2010 as the springboard for faster growth of the hardcopy peripherals (HCP) market in the coming years. The encouraging economic and political climate in the country bodes well for the HCP market, with the rest of the year expected to be characterized by an upturn in spending.

“Multi-function peripherals (MFPs) are expected to further eat into the market share of single function peripherals (SFPs), in-line with the increasing preference for more efficient and cost-effective printing solutions. Laser SFPs and color laser MFPs are also projected to have double-digit growth, especially with the availability of more affordable models that could call the attention of small offices/home offices (SOHOs), small businesses and, even home consumers.”, says Pamela Joy M. Sumanga, Associate Market Analyst for Hardcopy Peripherals research at IDC Philippines.

Canon products win prestigious EISA awards in Europe

Canon has won three major product awards in the prestigious annual awards judged by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). The Canon EOS 7D has won the accolade of ‘European Advanced SLR Camera 2010-2011’; the Canon EOS 550D has been awarded ‘European Camera 2010-2011’; and the Canon LEGRIA HF M31 has been named as the ‘European Family Camcorder 2010-2011’.

The EISA awards are voted on by an expert panel that comprises specialist editors from more than 50 prominent magazines across 20 countries. The awards recognise the products that combine the most advanced technology, features and design with genuine value, and the 2010-2011 EISA judging panel has heralded these Canon products as the best in their respective classes.

First SMS Trojan detected for smartphones running Android

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, discloses that the first malicious program classified as a Trojan-SMS has been detected for smartphones running on Google’s Android operating system. Named Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a, it has already infected a number of mobile devices.

The new malicious program penetrates smartphones running Android in the guise of a harmless media player application. Users are prompted to install a file of just over 13 KB with the standard Android extension .APK. Once installed on the phone, the Trojan uses the system to begin sending SMSs to premium rate numbers without the owner’s knowledge or consent, resulting in money passing from a user’s account to that of the cybercriminals.
