In the recently concluded policy workshop on cloud computing organized by the Business Software Alliance (BSA), Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT) and the Information Technology Association of the Philippines (ITAP) dubbed, “Leveraging the Cloud to Promote Sustainable Development,” Microsoft Philippines expressed its support to promote cloud computing services as an effective solution in organizing government and commercial infrastructures.

“We, at Microsoft, recognize the advantages of deploying cloud computing services, which can enhance work productivity, enable better business processes, and support green computing. We support the government and private sector in their advocacy of cloud computing and we recognize its potential to spur economic activity and job generation,” said Dondi Mapa, National Technology Officer, Microsoft Philippines and one of the speakers during the event.

The workshop aimed to increase the awareness of integrating cloud computing in business and government operations as well as to ensure that appropriate policies are in place. Globe Pushes Domestic IP Peering For Consumer Benefit

Contrary to the position taken by PLDT and Smart rejecting the proposal of the NTC to establish a domestic IP peering policy, Globe sided with the Regulator, and encouraged the immediate implementation of such policy for the benefit of consumers. Atty. Froilan M. Castelo, Head of Corporate and Legal Services at Globe admonished those that stand against the NTC circular saying, “With the internet now more pervasive than ever before, domestic IP peering can only serve to improve the quality of service delivery and lower costs for consumers. This should be top priority for any public service provider.”

Castelo explains, “In the internet space, there are times when customer experience is degraded due to longer IP peering routes elected by parties to be peered with. When data is routed outwards, say internationally first, before landing at its target destination, it wastes capacity and resources. More significantly, consumers unaware of the IP traffic routing taking place are needlessly burdened by sluggish response times and lower quality levels. When IP traffic needs to go from point A to point B – especially when both points are located within the Philippines – the transmission route taken ought to be the most direct, and certainly not international. This will immediately result in a faster, better internet access experience for consumers.”

Calling All Heroes—Lenovo Launches EExtraordinary 10-Second Hero Contest

Do you think you have what it takes to be a hero in just 10 seconds? Or do you know one? Lenovo wants to know! Starting today, Lenovo, in conjunction with Microsoft Corporation, is launching the EExtraordinary 10-Second Hero Contest in recognition of its Enhanced Experience 2.0 (EE 2.0) for Windows 7 program, which allows select Lenovo PCs to boot up in as little as 10 seconds. The contest calls on “doers” in countries around the world to submit 150 words explaining a good deed they or an organization they know of accomplished in 10 seconds. Lenovo will award $50,000 to a charity of choice based upon the person or organization who made the most significant impact in the same amount of time it takes to boot up a Lenovo PC with Enhanced Experience 2.0.

“At Lenovo, we understand every second can have a big impact on our customers, which is why we created Lenovo’s Enhanced Experience 2.0 for Windows 7. Our proprietary RapidBoot technology allows Lenovo PCs to boot up 20 seconds faster than any other Windows 7 PC on the market today—a small feat that makes a big difference to users every day,” said Vicky Agorrilla, Country General Manager, Lenovo Philippines. “Through the EExtraordinary contest, we are excited to uncover how others are making a difference by helping their communities in the same amount of time.”

Globe: PLDT should stop misleading the public and focus instead on their regulatory problems

Globe Telecom, in reaction to PLDT’s press statement asking the NTC to recall its radio frequencies, said that its transaction with Altimax Broadcasting was above board. “This transaction done in 2009 was fully disclosed with the National Telecommunications Commission and clearly above board. This is old news that PLDT simply wants to resurrect in view of their existing issues with their merger with Digitel,” said Atty. Froilan M. Castelo, head of corporate and legal services group of Globe Telecom.

Castelo added that, “PLDT should not shift focus on the current issues in relation to the deal. These issues like delayed interconnection, non-compliance with IP peering standards, and virtual monopoly of frequency spectrum should be addressed immediately because of their direct impact to consumers. PLDT should stop misleading the public with spurious attacks and focus on their regulatory and legal battles, foremost of which is that they are a non-Filipino corporation operating as a public utility and entering into a multi-billion transaction vested with public interest.
