Next-generation Filipino entrepreneur Roberto “Toby” Claudio, President of Toby’s Sports and founder of running specialty store Runnr recently received the distinction of being the Most Outstanding Junior Chamber International (JCI) Chapter President of the World in the recent JCI World Congress 2011 held in Brussels, Belgium.
In winning the award, Claudio bested more than 5000 other President’s of JCI chapters from cities all around the world. The award recognizes Claudio’s outstanding leadership of JCI Manila, the first JCI chapter in Asia and oldest leadership development organization in the Philippines, in fulfilling the mission of the JCI during his term in 2010. The JCI, founded in 1944, is a worldwide association of young active citizens who lead projects in the areas of Business, Community, Individual and International Development in order to create positive change. The criteria for the award rest on several factors such as general management, leadership skills, as well as his chapter’s accomplishment of numerous community development projects.
Under his leadership JCI Manila organized several community and sports development programs, among them the Dare to C.A.R.E for Smokey Mountain (Community Awareness and Rehabilitation Effort) which included construction of a baseball and soccer field—The Field of Dreams—where the Smokey Mountain formerly stood as well as several other community projects with a strong education advocacy.
As an entrepreneur, he spearheaded the evolution and growth of the country’s largest sporting goods chain that bears his name, resulting in the creation of Toby’s Arena, an interactive sports superstore that features activities and games that customers can try out and enjoy while inside the premises, like the Toby’s Basketball Shootout.
He also founded RUNNR, a world-class running specialty store, which became one of the catalysts for getting millions of Filipinos into the sport of running. Most recently he conceptualized urbanAthletics, a new lifestyle format which combines sportswear and streetwear in one store that showcases local Filipino design talents. His exceptional marketing skills, which helped win him various accolades including the Young Market Master during YMMA’s 3rd search for the country’s top marketers, allowed him to explore the intricacies of branding and its effectiveness in the Philippine setting.
