
Research in Motion (RIM) announced that the much awaited BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 has been released and is now available for free download. BlackBerry PlayBook users can now download the new version of the OS for a more enhanced tablet experience whether for work or leisure purposes.
“Building on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s proven web browsing, multimedia and multitasking strengths, the new BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 introduces a range of new communications and productivity enhancements as well as expanded app and content support,” said David J. Smith, SVP Mobile Computing, Research In Motion.

Globe Telecom, through its mobile commerce subsidiary G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI), has recently launched a first in the industry—a salary disbursement service that is linked to the leading mobile wallet in the Philippines and comes with insurance coverage.
The new GCASH PowerPay+ enables employees to receive their salaries on their mobile phones and withdraw from any of the 9,000 ATMs all over the country using the PowerPay+ ATM Card or cash out their money at any of the 6,000 GCASH outlets nationwide.

Eric Xu, Vice Chair and CEO of Huawei recently met with PLDT and Smart Communications Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan to discuss the progress of the ongoing modernization of Smart’s mobile phone network, which company officials say is entering its final phases and will be completed by mid-2012. Huawei is one of the world’s top three leading global providers of commercial telecom networks, that Smart has tapped for the total overhaul of its cellular network. The other two are Nokia Siemens Network and Ericsson. Huawei is handling the modernization of Smart’s network in the Visayas, Mindanao and Bicol regions. This involves the replacement of existing radio base station equipment with state-of-the-art facilities that enable Smart to expand its 3G network and rapidly deploy fourth-generation (4G) mobile phone technologies such as HSPA+ and Long Term Evolution (LTE). Aside from extending the reach and speed of its mobile Internet services, Smart’s modernization program will also strengthen its voice call and SMS services and raise the overall quality of its services.

Quick Response Codes or simply known as “QR Codes” are barcode-like images commonly found on billboards and on print ads. Using a smartphone with a compatible QR Code app, passersby can easily access additional information about a product or a service by capturing the QR Code with their phone camera.
In a developing country such as the Philippines, however, QR codes have found a less conventional, yet more meaningful use. With a little help from the Department of Tourism (DOT), wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), and travel website MyCebu.ph, domestic tourism is going online in real time.

Nokia continues to be on the top of the mobile phone race as a recent survey revealed it is the brand of mobile handset owned by most Filipinos in 2011.
The full results of the survey are disclosed in the Mobile Life 2012 study by TNS, the world’s leading custom research company. Mobile Life is the most comprehensive research on mobile phones that covers 43 markets from North America to Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa, with a total of 34,000 respondents.
