With no teachers, no classes, no books and no school activities to keep them busy, many teens simply snooze away the summer staying home. Tech-savvy teens, however, got to spend summer at Globe Telecom—as shop assistants at selected Globe stores under the Globe Junior Mobile Wizard program.
Eighteen high school students who are children of Globe employees were invited to join in the program over the summer—to assist in selected Globe concept stores in Metro Manila, to demonstrate and discuss the latest gadgets and mobile data services, as well as other Globe offers and services. They were selected based on the following qualifications: service-oriented with good communication and interpersonal skills; strong motivation and drive to learn in a hyper-market industry, tech-savvy and familiar with the latest gadgets in the market; and knowledgeable of mobile operating systems (Android, BB, IOS).
The pioneering program is a one-month summer program that offers tech-savvy teens the opportunity to better understand the Philippine telecommunications industry and Globe Telecom as an organization. Plus, they got first dibs to try all the latest handsets—from low-to-mid-range Android devices all the way to the hottest tablets.
Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said the Junior Mobile Wizard program is meant to help the youth develop people-relation skills; expose them to the latest in consumer technology; and help encourage entrepreneurship and a positive work ethic at an early age.
“The summer program teaches them about accountability and responsibility, and prepares them for challenges of adult life. The lessons learned are virtually endless. Not only are teens productive, they are also engaged and committed to something intentional. And because the the youth of today are the best teachers in so far as smartphones and technology are concerned as they can learn to use these at a much faster pace, we thought it best to have teens spending their summer at Globe. The first batch of Junior Mobile Wizards certainly makes some of the best ambassadors for Globe,” said Cu.
According to Globe Stores Transformation Head Maridol Ylanan, the program was launched initially to the children of Globe employees. “This is an opportunity for them to appreciate the work their parents do in Globe. In addition, we are the first Philippine telco operator to do this in our concept stores,” Ylanan said.
The summer program began with a three-day training ending with an actual in-store immersion at the Globe concept store in Greenbelt 4, where the retail managers of participating Globe stores in Alabang Town Center, Greenbelt 4, SM Megamall, and SM North Edsa actively participated in simulations.
“We are having so much fun here, meeting new friends and having a meaningful and fruitful summer at the same time,” says Aleanna Garcia, an incoming fourth year high school student of San Felipe Neri Parochial School in Parañaque. “And what more, we can also play and tinker with some of the coolest gadgets, it’s really fun!”
Globe plans to run the Junior Mobile Wizard program every summer, in partnership with Globe Human Resource Group. Not only will teenagers have something cool to do; they also make a bit of cash and learn new things along the way.
