Leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is once more supporting a government initiative that aims to get the academe and the youth more actively involved in environmental issues.
The National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools is a joint activity of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with the support of the corporate sector, including Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).
“We are happy to once more support the DENR and the other agencies for this nationwide search, which encourages schools to promote environmental consciousness among the youth and translate this into eco-friendly programs and activities,” said Smart Public Affairs Group head Ramon Isberto. Smart has been a partner for this initiative since 2009 when the search was first launched. Other companies, like One Meralco Foundation, are joining in this year to support this worthy endeavor.
The nationwide tilt, done every other year since 2009, is being held for the third time this year to recognize efforts of various schools to undertake eco-friendly initiatives and is open to all elementary, high school and college levels.
It also aims to develop skills and understanding among students, faculty and school administrators to initiate active responses and increase community awareness and involvement on environmental concerns.
The nationwide contest is being implemented in accordance with Republic Act No. 9512, otherwise known as the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008.
Winners of the national tilt are automatically sent as entries to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the ASEAN Eco-Schools Program.
Iliranan Elementary School of Negros Occidental and the Camarines Sur National High School, winners during the 2011 search, were recipients of the ASEAN Eco-Friendly Schools Award last year.
Both schools were recognized for their initiatives in integrating environmental protection and preservation in their curriculum, greening activities and overall school management. The ASEAN Eco-School Awards is part of the ASEAN Eco-Schools Program that aims to create a school culture geared toward environmental protection and preservation through management, commitment and infusion into curriculum, co-curriculum and greening activities.
For this year’s National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools, the deadline of submission of entries is on April 16, 2013. Apart from Smart and One Meralco, the competition is also supported by Nestle Philippines, Petron Corp. and Unilever Philippines. To know more, visit http://www.sustainableschools.ph.
