Empowering Doers through the Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB Partnership

Inspiration and expression have always found themselves in the arts, but when it comes to innovation, technology is the arena of creative individuals.

Lenovo, in collaboration with MTV, has recently announced the launch of the Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB, an integrated social platform that will enable the most progressive, creative and talented Millennials in the Philippines to share stories about their communities through music. Project CO:LAB, gives talented Filipinos, 18 years old and above, the opportunity to share the sights and sounds of their city in a creative music video themed with “Pulse of the World”. It aims to collaborate several individuals and industries, from filmmaking to instrumentalists, and DJs, all connected through talent and technology.

The participants will battle it out across categories and countries, as Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB is launched simultaneously in India, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

DJs, motion graphic artists, film makers, and vocalists/instrumentalists will be judged based on how they effectively utilize their “Do Machines” to convey the story of their city in original, inspirational, and creative sound and video clips. Shortlisted candidates who make it to the top 10 in their respective categories will then proceed to the next round, where the public will be voting for the local winners.

Local influencers and mentors across India, Japan, and the ASEAN region will finally select the winning ensemble which will create the “Pulse of the World” music video. The winning group will have the privilege of being mentored by renowned DJs Brendon Perera and Matty Wainwright and arts & design collective PHUNK in a 1-2 week regional workshop, as well as gain recognition as Lenovo’s brand ambassadors. The “Pulse of the City” music video will be shown during the 2013 MTV Worldstage concert, MTV’s signature event.

“Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB aims to inspire Millennials to take action and turn their dreams to reality. Both Lenovo and MTV are innovative companies, with dynamic brand personalities, that are focused on the Millennial generation who don’t just dream about achieving, but go out there and do. We chose to collaborate with MTV because it is the iconic destination for global Millennials and represents the sweet spot for music and entertainment for Millennials,” said Vicky Agorrilla, Country General Manager, Lenovo Philippines.

A panel of mentors, who are experts in their fields, will be guiding the Millennials throughout the 4 months of the campaign. In the Philippines, Lenovo tapped two unique and talented individuals, DJ Nina Saputil and director Enzo Valdez, to become Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB mentors and provide guidance for the country and regional winning Millennials.

“Technology is a powerful medium that can truly aid in the actualization of dreams. It has the power to connect people to the world,” said Enzo Valdez, the CEO of video production house Sindikato, Inc. The filmmaker cum producer who collaborates with celebrities and musicians on a regular basis finds passion in sharing the wonders of technology: “I feel honored to be part of this endeavor. The Lenovo and MTV partnership gives talented people the chance to show the world what they’re good at. CO:LAB is a medium for creative expression.”

DJ Nina Saputil, or DJ Mixtress as she is more popularly known to bar hoppers, said that the CO:LAB campaign leverages on MTV’s appeal to the youth and Lenovo’s expertise in technology to help talented individuals “follow their dreams”: “This is a great partnership. I hope that the youth today will grab this opportunity to showcase their talents. I am truly looking forward to sharing my expertise with aspiring artists.”

CO:LAB will be accepting entries for each of the four categories: DJ, vocalist/ instrumentalist, film making, motion graphics until April 21, 2013. The public will have the chance to vote from the top ten entries until May 12, 2013 to select local winners for each category. Mentors and influencers will decide on the regional winners who will be attending the workshop and creating the “Pulse of the World” music video. The winners’ “Pulse of the World” music video and profiles will be aired from July 8, 2013 to August 25, 2013.
