Shielding homes from surges and brownouts

The recent spate of torrential rains and storms brought by the monsoon season and the earthquake in the Visayas have highlighted our homes’ vulnerability to natural disasters. Days after the calamities, some households were still suffering from brownouts or erratic power supply that resulted in  in damaged appliances. In a country where numerous typhoons and earthquakes occur, very few homes are prepared to deal with electrical problems caused by these disasters.

To protect expensive appliances like computers and LED televisions, families need reliable electrical supply for their homes. They also need to guard against electrical surges, or a sudden overflow of voltage, that can damage appliances.

Solving issues of Virtualization and Cloud Computing

As more companies apply IT virtualization to improve operational efficiency, unforeseen issues on the physical infrastructure of data centers crop up, such as cooling and power.

These issues will only spike as shown in a study by AMI-Partners which finds that the SMB cloud market is growing 1.5 times faster than any ICT technology in the Philippines and Asia Pacific region. The study also estimates that a total of US$16.5 billion will be spent on cloud computing solutions among SMEs in the region.

APC Integrates with HP Operations Manager – Shows Impact of Physical Layer Changes on IT Systems

APC by Schneider Electric, a global leader in critical power and cooling services, today announced a tightly coupled software integration of APC InfraStruxureTM Central with HP Operations Manager, which allows IT managers to understand the impact of physical layer changes on IT systems and business applications. IT managers can now detect and monitor real-time changes in power, cooling and environment through HP Operations Manager, thereby reducing risk, raising data center system availability and increasing energy efficiency. The Smart Plug-In (SPI) will integrate InfraStruxure Central’s device hierarchy, device status, and monitored data into the HP Operations Manager environment.

76% of Asia Pacific Governments Recognize the Need for an ICT Sustainability Strategy

More than three quarters of Asia Pacific government CIOs and IT managers have realised the need for a dedicated office to plan and execute an overall ICT sustainability strategy, according to a new poll released by APC by Schneider Electric conducted at a FutureGov event. Interestingly for ICT vendors, 72% of the participants indicated that they include sustainability criteria in the evaluation and selection of ICT purchases. As an effort to explore Asia Pacific’s attitudes towards energy efficiency, the poll results underscore the importance of spreading awareness of energy management amid the high environmental and financial cost of energy throughout this region.

Remarkably, of the 32% of respondents who said that cost and/or availability of electricity will have a significant impact on their data centre’s ability to support operations over the next 3 years, more than 70 percent were from developing countries – India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Malaysia.  Representatives from the more developed Asia Pacific countries polled – China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Australia and Singapore – were less concerned with the supply of energy, noting that it may only affect a limited number of departments or have a minimal impact.

APC Expands InRow® Cooling Product Family with InRow OA and Refrigerant Distribution Unit

APC by Schneider Electric, a global leader in integrated critical power and cooling services, today announced the InRow® OA and Refrigerant Distribution Unit (RDU) pumped refrigerant cooling system. The APC InRow OA expands APC’s leading InRow product line by providing a overhead, energy efficient, refrigerant based cooling solution for data center environments.

“Data center densities continue to increase and efficiency concerns encourage customers to maximize all the available space for physical infrastructure,” said Dave Guidette, senior vice president, Enterprise Systems, Services & Software, APC. “The new APC InRow OA and RDU provide data center managers with increased flexibility by eliminating the need to remove or break-up racks to implement a row-based cooling architecture to meet the needs of higher density loads.”
