WD’s New My Book Studio Drive Mac Aesthetics and Performs to Creative Pro Standards

Western Digital announced that its newest generation of the popular My Book Studio external hard drives are designed for use with Mac computers and Apple Time Machine. Now available with a 3 TB storage capacity, the new design features a brushed aluminum casing to match the appearance of a Mac computer, and also serves to keep the drive cool while in use. The aluminum exterior, combined with its WD Caviar Green drives, eliminates the need for an internal fan to reduce drive noise and extend the life of the drive. Although formatted for Mac computers, the My Book Studio external hard drives can also be reformatted for PCs.

The My Book Studio external hard drive includes all the features and benefits that have made it one of the favorites among creative professionals and Mac computer enthusiasts, including its fast and flexible Firewire 800/400 and USB 2.0 interfaces, user-controlled automatic backup software and drive management, password protection and hardware encryption. WD® opens its first Digital Life Store in the Philippines

Western Digital opened its first WD Digital Life Store in the Philippines. Located at the 4th Floor of Cyberzone, The Annex, SM North EDSA, WD Digital Life Store will offer consumers a fully interactive shopping experience and will feature WD’s full range of branded products. Operating Hours of the store will be from 10 AM to 9 PM from Sunday – Thursday and 10 AM to 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Consumers can expect an exciting array of activities while they visit the WD Digital Life Store such as demonstration of WD TV® Live Hub™ media center, a Full-HD 1080p media player with a 1 terabyte (TB) built-in network hard drive that gives users the freedom to play all their personal media on any screen in the home; demonstration of WD Photos™ photo viewer app, which enables remote access to content stored on their WD network drive from their portable device, anywhere in the world; as well as an exhibition of the WD SmartWare™ software, a visual backup software with password protection and hardware encryption to ensure user’s data is protected.

WD ANNOUNCES Q1 REVENUE OF US$2.4 BILLION AND NET INCOME OF US$197 MILLION, OR US$0.84 PER SHARE

Western Digital Corp. reported revenue of US$2.4 billion, hard-drive unit shipments of 50.7 million and net income of US$197 million, or US$0.84 per share for its first fiscal quarter ended Oct. 1, 2010. In the year-ago quarter, the company reported revenue of US$2.2 billion, shipped 44.1 million hard drives, and reported net income and earnings per share of US$288 million and US$1.25, respectively.

“In a quarter characterized by aggressive industry pricing, we remained solidly profitable, grew revenues and unit shipments year-over-year, and generated US$390 million in cash from operations,” said John Coyne, president and chief executive officer. “Our low-cost business model and strong balance sheet enable us to weather the seasonality and cycles of the hard drive industry such as we experienced during the last two quarters.

WD completes acquisiiton of Hoya’s magnetic media operations

Western Digital Corp. announced that it has completed the previously announced acquisition of the magnetic media sputtering operations of Hoya Corporation and Hoya Magnetics Singapore Pte. Ltd. for approximately $233 million. The acquisition will support anticipated growth in hard drive demand.

WD has acquired the facilities, equipment, intellectual property and working capital of Hoya’s media sputtering operations, based in Tuas, Singapore, as well as certain related equipment at Hoya’s Nagasaka, Japan, research and development facilities. A multi-year commitment of Hoya glass substrate supply related to these operations was included in the agreement.
