2012 a ‘milestone year’ for Smart’s network

If there was ever a year in recent memory that Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) considers to be a turning point for the Philippine telecommunications industry, it would be 2012.

Citing several ‘firsts’ which the wireless leader has pioneered in the past year, Rolando G. Peña, network head for Smart, parent company PLDT, and subsidiaries Sun Cellular and Digitel, claims that 2012 was a milestone year especially in terms of introducing new network technologies.

JCI-Manila partners with Smart, IdeaSpace, Microsoft to boost start-up culture in Mapua

For two Saturdays in May, participating students, teachers and alumni from the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) will work together to develop innovative technology ideas that may have the potential for commercial success.

Dubbed as the JCI-MIT Technopreneurship Bootcamp, the event aims to promote the spirit of technology entrepreneurship or technopreneurship among the academe. The event is organized by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Manila in partnership with the MIT.

Network interconnection to boost Zamboanga’s ICT industry

The successful activation of local interconnection services between Globe Telecom and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) in Zamboanga is expected to boost the growing information and communications technology (ICT) industry in the city, specifically for the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.

After five years of negotiation, the two major telecom players have completed their network link-up in the city, following the announcement of National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba that the regulatory body expects the immediate implementation of local interconnection services between Globe and PLDT to provide subscribers and business establishments with quality and more affordable telecommunication services.

PLDT track record casts doubt on ‘Unli’ promise

Globe Telecom counsel Rodolfo Salalima recently expressed doubt on the promise of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) to maintain Sun Cellular’s ‘unlimited’ or bucket offerings despite the merger between PLDT and Digital Telecommunications, Inc. (Digitel).

“Given PLDT’s track record of unfulfilled promises in the telecommunications industry, it is highly unlikely that they will follow through on their verbal commitment to retain the ‘Unli’ plans,” said Salalima in an interview.

Globe, Digitel, Bayantel now 100% Interconnected Nationwide

The networks of Globe Telecom, Bayan Telecommunications (BayanTel) and Digitel Telecommunications Philippines (Digitel) are now 100% interconnected in all areas of commonpresence and operations nationwide, following the commercial activation of the local linkagebetween the networks of Globe and Digitel in Lucena City and the rest of Quezon province.

The achievement of full interconnection between Globe, Digitel and Bayantel in all areas of common operations is a mandate from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC),in compliance with Republic Act 7925, or The Public Telecommunications Policy Act of 1995. The law aims to create a universally accessible and fully integrated nationwide telecommunications network to encourage more infrastructure investments from the privatesector that benefit consumers.

Globe ready to compete, fundamental strategy to continue

Globe Telecom will remain focused on its strategy of delivering superior, relevant services to its customers, and build on the momentum that has been created since the second half of 2010. This statement was made in reaction to the recent announcement that Digitel and PLDT / Smart are combining forces in the mobile, fixed line, and broadband space.
