Chikka pushes IPv6 revolution

It’s the largest version of the Internet yet. The new IPv6 protocol opens 340 trillion, trillion, trillion IP addresses as 4 billion IP addresses originally provisioned by the older version of the Internet (IPv4) fast approaches depletion.

The Philippines’ Chikka, which founded a global Internet and mobile messaging community in 1999, became one of the first Internet-based companies to support this major transition in Internet history, aligning itself with other global players including Yahoo, Google, and Facebook who are enabling IPv6 for their products and services. The transition is led worldwide by the Internet Society.

IP-Converge Enhances Services by Implementing IPv6

Internet data center, telecommunications and cloud services provider IP Converge Data Services, Inc. recently announced that its network infrastructure now supports the use of IPv6 (Internet protocol version 6) for customers’ Internet connectivity requirements. The new Internet protocol allows the allocation of more IP addresses to various devices and is said to enhance the quality of service of Internet providers that use it.

An IP address is a numerical label assigned to a device (e.g., computer, printer) connected to a computer network and uses Internet Protocol for communication. This label has gone through various designs and architecture since the dawn of the Internet. Currently, the most widely used version is a 32-bit number (or four sets of 8-bit numbers) known as IPv4. However, large commercialization and individual usage of the web over the past few years has resulted in the near-exhaustion of IPv4 addresses. Hence, it is imperative for providers to shift towards the next generation Internet protocol, IPv6.

Globe Business promotes IPv6 adaptation in PH

Globe Business holds learning sessions and fora to actively promote the adoption of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in the Philippines, as part of a global drive to adopt to the new protocol by mid-2012. Leading the sessions are Achie Atienza (1st row, standing 2nd from left), Globe Business Product Manager for Internet; (from left, seated) Mar Apuhin of Cisco; Zwicky Cheung of Tata Communications; and Gilbert Virtucio, Technical Solutions Architect of Globe Business.

As part of its relentless commitment to business continuity and providing seamless Internet experience to its customers, Globe Business steps-up efforts to fast-track the adaptation of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in the country, in a move that reflects the growing importance of the new protocol as the current IPv4 addresses being used to connect to the Internet are facing near exhaustion.

IPv6 is the next generation of Internet addresses. It supports longer and a vastly larger amount of IP addresses than its predecessor, IPv4, which is facing shortage worldwide, with the last block of the 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses assigned in February 2011.

Globe future-proof network LTE and IPv6 ready

Globe Telecom’s latest network build, touted to be the most significant investment the company has done in the past 2 decades, is designed to be future-proof, capable of using the most advanced 4G technologies such as HSPA+ and long term evolution (LTE). It is IPv6 ready and boasts of an all-IP infrastructure for business customers. In addition, all site locations will be 3G-enabled.

The network upgrade will also increase use of fiber optics by 50% significantly increasing capacity, improve network quality, and meet the growing demand for bandwidth-heavy services such as broadband and mobile data. This will also improve network resiliency and protect traffic to ensure uninterrupted services and keep customers always connected.

Globe IP network nearing full transition to be IPv6 ready

Globe has already set in motion the transition of its core IP network to IPv6, or Internet Protocol version 6, making sure it is fully prepared as the Internet runs out of IPv4 addresses. Currently, public IPv4 addresses are being used to connect to the Internet and with these facing exhaustion in the near future, there is a strong need to move toward IPv6.

IPv6 supports a vastly larger amount of IP addresses than its predecessor. It can accommodate the immensely growing number of users, devices with wireless or wired access, and web services on the Internet. IPv6 will enable enterprise customers to have more public IP addresses to allocate within their organizations.
