2012 a ‘milestone year’ for Smart’s network

If there was ever a year in recent memory that Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) considers to be a turning point for the Philippine telecommunications industry, it would be 2012.

Citing several ‘firsts’ which the wireless leader has pioneered in the past year, Rolando G. Peña, network head for Smart, parent company PLDT, and subsidiaries Sun Cellular and Digitel, claims that 2012 was a milestone year especially in terms of introducing new network technologies.

PLDT, Smart and Cisco prepare PH for Next-Gen Internet

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and Smart Communications Inc. (Smart), the country’s largest telecommunications providers, and Cisco have partnered to expand the PLDT Group’s nationwide broadband network to meet growing local demand for high bandwidth fixed and mobile services like 3G, HSPA+ and LTE.

This collaboration, which has resulted in the installation of more than 40 core sites wired nationwide, is part of PLDT’s Network Modernization Program to bring Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) to the Philippines.

Smart’s official reaction to the NTC press statement

Yesterday, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) confirmed the network superiority of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) following the release of the results of its network quality tests for the second quarter of this year which showed Smart posting significantly better test results than Globe Telecom.

Globe, however, issued a statement that attempted to turn the results of the NTC’S Quality of Service Benchmarking Test upside down.

Leading Analyst Firm names Ericsson a leader in LTE Magic Quadrant

Ericsson is placed in the “Leaders” quadrant in Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant report for LTE. Gartner, a worldwide IT research and advisory firm, evaluated end-to-end vendors of LTE equipment based on their ability to execute and completeness of vision in the LTE market.

Network quality and performance is becoming a clear competitive advantage, as usage and traffic patterns change. With the rapid uptake of smartphones mobile data traffic is expected to grow 15 times by 2017. Operators are challenged to successfully deliver a consistently good user experience for the services consumed on smartphones, tablets and other new devices. This increasing focus on network performance comes from the early LTE markets such as the US and Korea and from other markets with high smartphone penetration. Today around 50 percent of smartphones worldwide are connected to an Ericsson network.

Smart fires up LTE network in North Luzon

Wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) fired up the first and only Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Baguio City, in time for the annual Panagbenga festival — marking the introduction of LTE in Northern Luzon.

LTE is the most advanced fourth generation (4G) wireless technology, capable of speeds of 100 Mbps and above. With LTE, users can download movies in minutes, stream flawlessly in High Definition, and engage in other media-rich online activities like gaming, at breakneck speeds.
