2012 a ‘milestone year’ for Smart’s network

If there was ever a year in recent memory that Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) considers to be a turning point for the Philippine telecommunications industry, it would be 2012.

Citing several ‘firsts’ which the wireless leader has pioneered in the past year, Rolando G. Peña, network head for Smart, parent company PLDT, and subsidiaries Sun Cellular and Digitel, claims that 2012 was a milestone year especially in terms of introducing new network technologies.

Bayantel to benefit from Globe debt purchase

Globe Telecom’s tender offer to acquire at least 70% of Bayan Telecommunications Inc.’s (BTI) outstanding debt will strengthen BTI’s operations and will ultimately benefit its customers, said Globe chief financial officer Albert de Larrazabal.

“The tender offer is representative of Globe’s belief in the value of BTI as a nationally enfranchised entity,” said de Larrazabal, adding that BTI’s debt load has hindered its performance. “Potentially combining Globe’s assets and capabilities with BTI through collaborative business efforts will enable both companies to become more competitive and help accelerate the completion of BTI’s rehabilitation.”

Smart’s official reaction to the NTC press statement

Yesterday, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) confirmed the network superiority of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) following the release of the results of its network quality tests for the second quarter of this year which showed Smart posting significantly better test results than Globe Telecom.

Globe, however, issued a statement that attempted to turn the results of the NTC’S Quality of Service Benchmarking Test upside down.

Globe files complaint with NTC against use of illegal repeaters

Globe Telecom has formally filed a complaint with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) against the use of illegal repeaters as part of its intensified efforts to track down users and sellers of the equipment that cause network interference for subscribers in a specific area.

Illegal repeaters come in the form of indoor or outdoor antennas and wireless adapters that boost network coverage and signal by means of hogging bandwidth from a legitimate Globe network infrastructure. They are installed in between trees, building windows, toilet areas, rooftop areas and building spaces, making them increasingly hard to locate. Globe proposes 3-year plan to reduce interconnection rates

In support of the National Telecommunications Commission’s (NTC) request for telecommunication companies to lower interconnection charges, Globe Telecom submitted a position paper detailing its proposal on reducing fees for subscribers calling and sending texts outside their respective networks.

In the position paper, Globe proposed a 3-year “glide path” implementation method beginning January 31, 2012 to allow mobile operators more time to restructure business plans and models given changes in pricing schemes, as well as to help cushion possible losses in revenues.
